Green Tea Compound Shows Potential in Alzheimer’s Prevention

Manila: Scientists have discovered two natural compounds that may reverse brain cell ageing and eliminate harmful protein buildup, offering a potential non-drug approach for Alzheimer’s disease.

According to Philippines News Agency, the compounds identified are nicotinamide, a form of vitamin B3, and epigallocatechin gallate, an antioxidant found in green tea. These compounds have been shown to restore guanosine triphosphate (GTP) levels, a crucial molecule for energy production in brain cells.

Research has demonstrated that treating aged nerve cells with these compounds can restore GTP levels to those found in younger cells within 24 hours. This restoration of energy levels enables neurons to regain their essential cleanup function, significantly enhancing the clearance of amyloid protein clusters, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease.

Although further studies are necessary to determine the optimal administration of these compounds, the findings suggest a promising new strategy for treating age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s by boosting the brain’s energy systems.
