Filipino Runners Join 27th Corsa di Miguel in Rome

Rome: A strong and increasingly visible contingent of Filipino runners, many of them based in Italy, joined around 15,000 participants in the 27th Corsa di Miguel here on Sunday. The 10-kilometer race unfolded along the historic roads connecting Foro Italico, Ponte Milvio, and the Olympic Stadium in honor of the memory of Miguel S¡nchez, the disappeared Argentine marathon runner and poet.

According to Philippines News Agency, hundreds of associations, along with schools and families, also took part in the 5-kilometer Fun Run and the 3-kilometer events, transforming the day into a true community festival. The race was officially opened by Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, together with Councilor for Sport, Tourism, Fashion, and Major Events Alessandro Onorato, who highlighted Rome's enduring enthusiasm for running and its openness to athletes from all backgrounds.

Athletes gathered inside the Olympic Stadium, the symbolic heart of the race, which over its 27-year history has become a landmark of sport and solidarity. Argentine Paralympian Martin Sharples entered the stadium wearing his national jersey in tribute to his friend S¡nchez and in dedication to Giorgio Lo Giudice, president of Club Atletico Centrale and long-time organizer of the Corsa di Miguel, who passed away on June 4, 2025.

Beyond competition, the event highlighted integration and inclusion, with Filipino runners proudly taking part alongside Italians and other nationalities, reflecting how sport has become a bridge for migrant communities in Italy, fostering friendship, cultural exchange, and shared identity through running. Italian runners dominated the event with Giuseppe Gerratana bagging the men's title in 29 minutes and 31 seconds and Lucia Mitidieri taking the women's category in 34.47 minutes.

This year also marked the second edition of 'Corsa di Miguel Onda Donna', an initiative dedicated to increasing female participation in sports, celebrating women's strength, resilience, talent, and inspiring confidence and courage.
