Education is a Right, Marcos Emphasizes as Government Expands Student Support

Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday emphasized that education is a fundamental right for every Filipino, urging students to take advantage of government assistance aimed at helping them complete their studies.

According to Philippines News Agency, during his address to presidential scholars at the Obando Central School in Bulacan, Marcos reiterated the government's responsibility to ensure young Filipinos have access to educational opportunities and financial support. The government, he stated, views education as a right rather than a privilege, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a robust education sector.

A total of 55 scholars from Obando's 11 barangays are slated to receive PHP20,000 each through the Socio-Civic Projects Fund (SCPF) initiative. This scholarship assistance is part of the 'Bawat Bayan Makikinabang' program, under which each barangay receives PHP200,000 in assistance from the national government.

Marcos encouraged barangays to allocate half of the funding, or PHP100,000, for scholarships supporting five students, especially those nearing graduation but facing financial challenges that may hinder their ability to complete their studies. He highlighted the need to identify students who are close to graduating but struggle due to financial constraints, potentially impacting their ability to finish their education.

The President noted that with over 42,000 barangays across the nation, the initiative could potentially support more than 210,000 students nationwide. He underscored the lasting value of education, describing it as a lifelong asset that cannot be lost or stolen, making it one of the most valuable investments a person can make.

Marcos also urged the scholars to apply themselves diligently in their studies and prepare for future leadership roles in society, noting that today's students will eventually become the country's teachers, professionals, entrepreneurs, and public servants.

The 'Bawat Bayan Makikinabang' program, launched on February 23, has expanded across various provinces and cities, including Eastern Visayas, Cagayan, Muntinlupa, Las Pi±as, Para±aque, Pasay, Makati, and Manila. To date, more than 8,700 barangays have benefitted from the program.
