DTI Empowers Ilocos Norte MSMEs with Halal Certification Assistance

Ilocos norte: Six food business owners in Ilocos Norte province are set to make their mark in the halal food market after successfully meeting the regulatory requirements established by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

According to Philippines News Agency, Lucky Theo Food Products, Mango King, Cormel Foods, Cecilia's Delights, Namnama's Chichacorn, and BBs Sweets cupcake shop represent the first batch of halal-certified food businesses in the province. DTI-Ilocos Norte Director Amelia Galvez highlighted the significance of this milestone in a recent media interview, stating that the program is part of DTI's free assistance initiative, which also covers the certification fees.

The term "halal" refers to what is lawful or permissible in Islam. Galvez emphasized that obtaining halal certification offers food businesses enhanced market access to Muslim-majority countries and appeals to halal-conscious visitors.

Expressing gratitude, Suerte Mia Soriano, the owner of Lucky Theo's Food Products, shared her appreciation for DTI's support. She noted that being halal-certified assures the suitability of her products for Muslim consumers. Under DTI's guidance, Soriano adhered to the rigorous halal standards and requirements, which included a thorough inspection, evaluation, and verification of ingredients, raw materials, and various production processes.

Suerte Mia Soriano further explained the intricate nature of the certification process but affirmed its value. Her products, including garlic chichacorn, banana chips, camote chips, and taro chips, are now available in multiple commercial outlets, including major malls nationwide.
