Iligan city: Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon on Tuesday assessed two bridges severely affected by the former Tropical Storm Basyang (international name Penha) in Iligan City. He ordered the construction of a temporary bridge as an alternative to the Panul-iran Bridge in Barangay Abuno, which was swept away by the strong current from the Iligan River when Basyang hit over the weekend.
According to Philippines News Agency, the construction of the temporary steel bridge is expected to be completed within 60 days. Dizon stated, "We need to immediately construct a temporary steel bridge while we will include in our budget the construction of a permanent bridge in our 2027 budget." He emphasized the urgent need for Iligan City residents to have access or the ability to cross the bridge.
The destruction of the Panul-iran Bridge also impacted the flood control project in the barangay, necessitating further assessment. The bridge, constructed in 2006, features two lanes, measuring 39.6 meters in length and 9.9 meters in width, and serves as the main bypass road from Iligan City to Marawi City.
During his visit, Dizon also inspected the Tubod Bridge and nearby homes in Barangay Tubod. He instructed personnel to dredge the Iligan River to deepen the waterway and ensure continuous clearing of roads and bridges from debris.
