DOTr Introduces Bus Services to Alleviate LRT-2 Commuter Burden

Antipolo:The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has launched a trial deployment of 20 buses to support the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) and provide an alternative for stranded commuters. This initiative aims to address the limited capacity of the LRT-2 and the long queues that form during peak hours.

According to Philippines News Agency, the buses will operate from Antipolo to Cubao and Legarda, offering discounted fares to reduce the financial strain on passengers. DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon highlighted that during peak hours from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m., approximately 4,000 passengers are unable to board the trains, resulting in waiting times of 30 to 45 minutes.

Currently, only 10 trains are operational, which is the maximum capacity due to inadequate maintenance and funding over the years. The trains, now 25 years old, have not been replaced. To mitigate this issue, the new bus service will reduce regular fares by 20 percent, lowering them from PHP80 to PHP66, with students paying PHP55.

Dizon mentioned that acquiring new train coaches would take three to four years, prompting the exploration of alternative solutions like a busway-style system along Marcos Highway. Additionally, the DOTr is considering a public-private partnership (PPP) for the LRT-2's operations and maintenance, while ensuring that fare control remains with the government. Dizon assured that the fare will not change, but improvements in service and train maintenance are expected.
