Manila: The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has called upon Ateneo de Manila University men's basketball team head coach, Tab Baldwin, to attend a meeting on June 15 concerning the tragic deaths of two student-athletes. The meeting, set for 10 a.m. on Monday, will focus on Baldwin's working permit and related compliance issues.
According to Philippines News Agency, Labor Secretary Francis Tolentino announced that Coach Baldwin is required to present his valid Alien Employment Permit (AEP) and demonstrate that it covers all coaching and supervisory activities, including off-campus training events like the recent team-building exercise in Aurora. This directive was shared during a press conference at the DOLE main office in Intramuros, Manila.
Secretary Tolentino also outlined the need for Baldwin to submit a written explanation regarding the June 8 teambuilding activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, detailing the event's nature, supervision, and safety protocols. The activity tragically led to the drowning of student-athletes Rene Clert Baterbonia, 19, and Divine Adili, 21.
Under Article 40 of the Labor Code of the Philippines, DOLE reserves the right to review the employment status of foreign nationals. Secretary Tolentino emphasized that no foreign worker is exempt from Philippine labor laws and that compliance is mandatory.
Failure to comply with the subpoena or any findings of unauthorized employment could result in the suspension or cancellation of Baldwin's AEP, which is essential for securing a working visa in the Philippines.
Meanwhile, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) has confirmed that they have not yet received an Immigration Lookout Bulletin Order (ILBO) against Baldwin. BI Deputy spokesperson Melvin Mabulac stated that as of Thursday afternoon, no such order had been received.
The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) has requested the Department of Justice to issue an ILBO against several individuals in connection with the investigation into the deaths of Baterbonia and Adili.
