DOH Mourns Passing of Former Secretary Alfredo Bengzon

Manila: The Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday announced the passing of former secretary Alfredo Rafael Antonio Bengzon, describing him as a physician and leader who championed accessible healthcare for Filipinos. Bengzon, who served as DOH secretary from 1986 to 1992 under the Corazon Aquino administration, passed away on Tuesday. He was 90.

According to Philippines News Agency, the DOH stated that Bengzon 'devoted his life to making healthcare more accessible and affordable for every Filipino.' His efforts were noted for the Generics Act of 1988, his stance on family planning, and the reorganization of the DOH, all of which reflected his commitment to integrity, equity, and public service.

The Generics Act of 1988 institutionalized the use of generic names in the prescription and dispensing of medicines, making essential drugs more affordable and accessible to the public. The DOH expressed that Bengzon's legacy would continue to shape the country's healthcare system for generations to come.

The agency commemorated Bengzon with a message of gratitude, 'Rest in peace, Sec. Bengzon. Maraming salamat sa iyong buhay na inalay para sa kalusugan ng bayan (Thank you very much for your life dedicated to the health of the nation).' In recognition of his leadership and reform efforts, Bengzon received the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Government Service in 1991. He was also the founding dean of the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health.
