Manila: The Department of Health (DOH) on Monday announced its active monitoring of leptospirosis cases across the nation following recent heavy rains and widespread flooding. The department has implemented 33 fast lanes and optimized bed capacities to manage the influx of patients affected by the disease.
According to Philippines News Agency, the DOH has reported cases primarily in the National Capital Region (NCR), Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, and Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR). As of August 22, there have been 4,285 cases recorded nationwide, marking a significant 37-percent decrease compared to 6,839 cases reported during the same period in 2025.
A concerning uptick was noted with 495 new cases from July 26 to August 8, a 29-percent increase compared to the 383 cases reported between July 12 and July 25. The NCR, Cagayan Valley, and Central Luzon have the highest concentrations of cases.
The DOH has cautioned the public about potential further increases in cases due to the disease's five- to 15-day incubation period. They advise individuals who have been exposed to floodwaters to seek medical consultation within 24 to 48 hours to mitigate the risk of severe illness.
For admitted indigent patients, the Zero Balance Billing Program is available in DOH hospitals, and PhilHealth benefit packages provide coverage for severe leptospirosis cases up to PHP400,000.
