Dinagat, Davao Police Rescue 7 Minors from Human Trafficking

Dinagat: Governor Nilo Demerey Jr. lauded the police forces in Dinagat Islands and Davao City for rescuing seven minors, victims of human trafficking, officials announced Wednesday.

According to Philippines News Agency, a report from the Dinagat Islands Police Provincial Office revealed that seven minors-six boys and one girl aged 16 to 18 from Barangays Poblacion, Aurelio, and Matingbe in San Jose-were transported by a recruiter to Davao City on March 29. The suspect, identified as Marilou Perez Eviota, a widow and resident of Barangay Matingbe, allegedly recruited the minors with promises of high-paying work in a store in Davao City.

The minors were transported on the morning of March 29 without parental consent. A concerned friend of one of the victims informed a parent about the travel, leading to a mobile phone conversation between the victim and his mother. The victim disclosed they were en route to Davao City and identified Eviota as their companion. The mother attempted to gather more information by visiting the recruiter's residence but was unable to obtain a contact number or details about the promised work.

The mother subsequently reported the incident to the police, who coordinated with Police Station No. 115 in Ecoland, Davao City. The authorities were able to intercept the suspect, rescuing the seven minors later that evening. The victims were then handed over to a city social worker in Ecoland for processing and proper disposition.

Governor Demerey commended the prompt action of the police in both Dinagat Islands and Davao City, expressing gratitude for the successful rescue. He mentioned that the provincial government is arranging the minors' travel back to Dinagat Islands and emphasized that charges would be filed against the suspect for taking the minors without parental consent.

Demerey also highlighted the importance of education for children, stating that efforts are underway to establish a public college in the province to ensure access to higher education. Additionally, the government is strengthening skills training programs in collaboration with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.
