DepEd Seeks PHP928.5 Billion from Senate for Education Initiatives

Manila: The Department of Education (DepEd) is requesting a PHP928.52-billion allocation in the proposed 2026 national budget, which represents four percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). This budget aims to support programs related to classrooms, nutrition, digital learning, and the welfare of teachers.

According to Philippines News Agency, Education Secretary Sonny Angara emphasized on Tuesday that the proposed budget, currently under Senate review, is designed to ensure that every peso benefits learners and educators. Angara remarked, “Malaki pa ang hamon na hinaharap natin sa sektor ng edukasyon, ngunit malinaw ang direksyon – bawat pondo ay para sa mga guro at mag-aaral,” highlighting the significant challenges faced in the education sector and the clear direction towards prioritizing teachers and students.

Out of the total requested budget, PHP56.4 billion is designated for school infrastructure. This includes the construction and rehabilitation of classrooms, development of medium-rise buildings, electrification of schools, and the creation of library hubs and resilient facilities. Nutrition programs are also a priority, with PHP50.6 billion allocated for the School-Based Feeding Program, aimed at extending feeding days and providing meals to malnourished pupils and adolescent mothers.

To address digital disparities, the budget proposes PHP16 billion for acquiring 243,000 laptops and improving internet connectivity for schools that currently lack online access. Additionally, PHP6 billion is earmarked for teacher development, aiming to enhance the career progression of over 113,000 teachers and school heads.

Angara stressed that these allocations are part of the Marcos administration’s strategy to meet immediate educational needs while establishing a foundation for enduring reforms. He stated, “Ang edukasyon ay hindi natatapos sa isang taon o sa isang budget cycle. Ito ay pangmatagalang laban na nangangailangan ng matatag na suporta,” underscoring the necessity for strong, continuous support for education.

Furthermore, DepEd has prepared a PHP33.6-billion “wishlist” for additional initiatives such as extended feeding days, disaster preparedness, professional development, and modernization of facilities, contingent on available fiscal resources.
