DepEd Chief Stresses Importance of Scouting for Youth Survival Skills

Manila: Education Secretary Sonny Angara emphasized the significance of Scouting in fostering life-saving and survival skills among Filipino youth. This statement comes in light of a recent tragedy in Aurora involving two student-athletes from Ateneo de Manila University and a magnitude 7.8 earthquake affecting parts of Mindanao.

According to Philippines News Agency, Angara highlighted that the forthcoming national meeting between the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) will focus on enhancing swimming and water survival skills among Scouts. Speaking at the World of Scouting: Heritage and Adventure Camp at Ayala Malls Circuit Makati, Angara stated, "We cannot control all challenges that our youth will face, but we can prepare them."

He underscored that safety and survival skills could be pivotal in determining outcomes during crises, potentially being the difference between danger and hope, or even life and death. Angara stressed that these essential skills can be cultivated through Scouting, which serves as a vital partner for the DepEd.

Beyond the acquisition of badges or ranks, Angara noted that Scouting equips learners with preparedness, compassion, and leadership abilities to navigate real-world uncertainties. "When someone needed you, did you show up? That's the true essence of always being ready," Angara concluded.
