Dagupan: The city government here opted for a pared down Bangus Festival this year amid the fuel price hike due to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. But the Bangusan Street Party - considered the highlight of the festival that began April 14 - will proceed as scheduled on April 30 and feature around 20,000 pieces of bangus (milkfish) to be grilled and served.

According to Philippines News Agency, in an interview on Saturday, Mayor Belen Fernandez said over 1,000 one-meter long barbecue grills inclusive of five kilos of bangus, charcoal, and drinks would be lined up by participants during the street party. Guest performers would also be on at least six stages along De Venecia Road Extension.

Fernandez mentioned that all preparations have been set in motion, including security measures. "We now have more police personnel in the city, from 150 to over 450, and we will also ask for augmentation from the regional police and civic groups," she said.

The Bangus Festival this year is simpler compared to previous years, foregoing some activities such as the "Gilon, Gilon Street Dance" competition because of the fuel price hike. Other events include free eye checkups, dental missions, Bangus Rodeo, and Bangusine (culinary contest). "This is for the bangus industry so we cannot cancel it," she said.
