Manila: The Department of Agriculture (DA) is taking decisive actions to implement measures that protect local food producers and consumers from the economic impacts of the ongoing Middle East conflict, including the rising fuel costs.
According to Philippines News Agency, Assistant Secretary and spokesperson Arnel De Mesa stated that the DA is expediting the release of fuel subsidies to farmers and fisherfolk significantly affected by the increasing oil prices, which have led to higher fertilizer and freight costs. During the Kapihan ng Samahang Plaridel forum at Rizal Park Hotel in Manila, De Mesa highlighted the directives of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. in addressing the challenges faced by these sectors.
De Mesa emphasized that more than 100,000 individuals have already benefited from the fuel subsidy program, and this number is expected to grow as the initiative continues. He also noted that the DA's assistance extends beyond fuel subsidies. In Benguet, where increased fuel costs have led many travelers to reduce their trips, the DA has deployed over 38 Kadiwa trucks to purchase local products and has organized trade fairs with regional offices.
Local government units are being encouraged to support the 'Sagip Saka' (Save Farming) program, which allows direct purchases from legitimate farmers' organizations. Additionally, the government has introduced toll-free access for accredited DA truckers on major expressways, providing significant savings for transporters.
In anticipation of the El Ni±o season, the DA is collaborating with other government agencies to support farmers and fisherfolk. The agency plans to adjust planting calendars and promote less water-intensive crops to maintain food security. De Mesa also mentioned the government's solar-powered irrigation system, expected to be fully operational toward the end of the year, which is anticipated to provide substantial assistance to the agricultural sector.
