PNP Pledges Enhanced Safety Measures After Officer’s Death in Drug Operation

Manila: The chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., has announced plans to implement changes aimed at safeguarding police officers following the fatal shooting of M/Sgt. Romulo Galvez Jr. during an anti-illegal drugs operation in Bacolod City.

According to Philippines News Agency, Galvez was killed by drug suspect Ronilo Panuncial, 32, in a buy-bust operation in Barangay Singcang Airport. Galvez, who had dedicated 18 years to the PNP, was laid to rest at Forest Lake Memorial Park in Barangay Sum-ag.

Gen. Nartatez emphasized the importance of officer safety, stating, "There are adjustments that will be implemented to better protect our personnel. Lessons learned here will be immediately cascaded nationwide because safety of our personnel is non-negotiable. We will enhance backup, equipment, and coordination." He further noted that Galvez's sacrifice reinforces the PNP's commitment to its mission with greater discipline and unity.

As the PNP mourns the loss of a colleague, Nartatez reaffirmed their dedication to honoring the bravery of fallen officers by improving safety measures. He, along with Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla, attended Galvez's wake in Bago City, Negros Occidental, where they provided financial support to the bereaved family. "We will not abandon his family," Nartatez assured.
