Cavite: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is contemplating an extension of voting hours in the special polls for the 4th Legislative District of Cavite amid unfavorable weather conditions. The ongoing elections aim to elect a new representative for Dasmari±as City in the House of Representatives.

According to Philippines News Agency, Comelec Chairperson George Garcia announced their readiness to extend the voting period by several hours if necessary, to accommodate voters hesitant to leave their homes due to heavy rain. "If the rain doesn't stop, voting hours could be extended - even just for a short while - to accommodate our fellow citizens," Garcia stated.

Garcia mentioned that the extension would not be pursued if the weather conditions improve. "If the rain has stopped, we will no longer take the option to extend voting hours," he added. The Comelec is aiming for a 50-percent voter turnout, with the 4th Legislative District of Cavite featuring 447,387 registered voters.

Five candidates are contesting in the special polls: Dasmari±as City Mayor Jennifer Barzaga, Raul Rex Del Rosario Mangubat, Marvin Opamin Dupal-ag, Leysander Aguilar Ordenes, and Jacinto Bautista Frani Jr. The winner of the special polls is expected to be proclaimed by early Sunday morning, August 30, as the Comelec seeks to replace expelled Representative Francisco Barzaga Jr.
