Malaca±ang: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has yet to decide on possible clemency for former overseas Filipino worker Mary Jane Veloso, as the Office of the Executive Secretary reviews legal provisions and discussions with Indonesian authorities. Palace Press Officer Claire Castro stated that the matter remains under evaluation, emphasizing that the final decision is the President's.
According to Philippines News Agency, Castro highlighted in a Palace press briefing that the Office of the Executive Secretary is studying the relevant provisions and minutes from meetings with Indonesia. Questions have been raised about whether a previous petition for clemency filed by Veloso's family had reached the President.
Mary Jane Veloso, who has been imprisoned for over 16 years, reiterated her appeal for clemency in an open letter to her supporters. Veloso was arrested in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, in 2010 after 2.6 kilograms of heroin were found in her suitcase, leading to her conviction for drug trafficking and a death sentence. A last-minute reprieve was granted after the Philippines informed Indonesia of her recruiters' surrender.
In September 2022, during his first state visit, President Marcos discussed Veloso's case with then-Indonesian President Joko Widodo. Over two years later, Marcos announced Veloso's repatriation to the Philippines. On December 18, 2024, Veloso arrived in the Philippines and was taken to the Correctional Institute for Women to serve the remainder of her sentence.
Addressing concerns about legal impediments, Castro reiterated that the review is ongoing. The latest minutes of the meeting with Indonesia are being studied to ensure no laws are violated, and the President's prerogative will guide the final decision.
