Masbate: At least 41 patients, primarily children suffering from cleft lip and palate conditions in Masbate province, have received life-changing surgical interventions through the 'Golden Smile, Brighter Tomorrow' initiative, officials confirmed.
According to Philippines News Agency, the program was spearheaded by the Phil. Gold Processing and Refining Corp. (PhilGold), in collaboration with the Masbate provincial government and Operation Smile Philippines Foundation Inc. PhilGold president Ryan Rusk emphasized the importance of the initiative, highlighting their commitment to restoring dignity, confidence, and hope through comprehensive support for affected individuals.
The Golden Smile program has provided free surgeries to patients ranging from 2 months to 49 years old, complete with post-surgery care, medication, and logistical support such as transportation and accommodation. A dedicated team of 40 medical volunteers, including plastic surgeons, anesthesiologists, and various specialists, conducted the procedures at the Masbate Provincial Hospital.
Emiliano Romano of Operation Smile International shared that the foundation has performed 350,000 surgeries globally, with 35,000 taking place in the Philippines since 1988. The focus on regions like Masbate, where the need is significant, underscores the foundation's targeted approach to healthcare delivery.
Dr. Alexis Bautista, PhilGold's senior medical superintendent, noted that the program extends beyond surgery to include holistic care such as speech therapy and nutrition counseling. Bautista stressed that the ultimate goal is to provide patients with a transformative experience that encourages them to embrace their smiles confidently.
