Cebu Peace Trilateral Meeting Highlights Philippines’ Diplomatic Role in ASEAN

Cebu: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s facilitation of a trilateral meeting to ease tensions between Thailand and Cambodia has underscored Philippine diplomacy and its commitment to dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution. On May 7, during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit, the meeting between Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, and Marcos concluded with commitments to sustain talks and avoid actions that might escalate the ongoing border dispute.

According to Philippines News Agency, Hun and Anutin agreed to measures aimed at rebuilding trust and gradually restoring bilateral relations, which was symbolically affirmed with a handshake in Marcos' presence. The Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Analyn Ratonel, emphasized the Philippines' role in fostering peace and dialogue, highlighting the broader goal of achieving a peaceful and prosperous ASEAN region.

In a PTV interview, political analyst Froilan Calilung remarked that the meeting reflects the Philippines' dedication to peaceful conflict resolution, sending a strong message of commitment to other ASEAN nations. He noted that the Philippines' diplomatic efforts create avenues for trust and cooperation, reinforcing ASEAN's value as a bloc.

Calilung also pointed out that the Philippines' position as a peacemaker can lead to increased opportunities and investments for the nation. The trilateral meeting, spearheaded by Marcos, is seen as a crucial step in building trust and cooperation, essential for securing long-term investments.

Utilizing its role as ASEAN chair for 2026, the Philippines hosted the meeting between Cambodia and Thailand. Both Hun and Anutin expressed gratitude to Marcos for organizing the trilaterals, with the Cambodian leader commending Marcos for his leadership in promoting regional peace and unity.
