Catholic Faithful Urged to Include World Peace in Good Friday Prayers

Manila: Manila Archbishop Cardinal Jose Advincula has called upon the clergy and the faithful to include a special intention for world peace in their prayers during the Celebration of the Lord's Passion on Good Friday. This request was made in Circular No. 2026-38, emphasizing the importance of praying for peace amid global unrest.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Cardinal's appeal aligns with Pope Leo XVI's call for prayers to Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace. In his Angelus Message during the Palm Sunday Homily, Pope Leo XVI urged the Church to pray for those affected by war and for pathways to reconciliation and peace. He highlighted the need to remember Christians in the Middle East, who are facing the aftermath of conflict and are often unable to fully participate in the Holy Week liturgies.

Cardinal Advincula emphasized that as the Church reflects on the mystery of the Lord's Passion, it is important not to forget those currently enduring suffering. He stated that their struggles demand a response from all believers, urging everyone to focus on Jesus, who is recognized as the King of Peace.

The prescribed prayer for Good Friday seeks peace throughout the world, particularly in areas plagued by conflict. It asks for God's mercy to eliminate violence and greed, promoting harmony among nations. The prayer concludes with a plea for divine intervention to swiftly eradicate violence and bring about peace.

Cardinal Advincula also encouraged the faithful to collectively approach the Cross with their sorrows and hopes for peace. He invoked the intercession of Our Lady of Sorrows, praying for peace through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the Cross, as referenced in Colossians 1:20.
