Caraga LGUs and Agencies Prepare for Tropical Depression Basyang

Caraga: Local government units (LGUs) and relevant government agencies have initiated precautionary measures as Tropical Depression (TD) Basyang poses a threat to the Caraga Region. As of 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Basyang was positioned 735 km east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, progressing southwestward with maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center and gusts reaching up to 70 kph.

According to Philippines News Agency, Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 1 has been declared in Surigao del Sur and the eastern part of Surigao del Norte, which includes Siargao and Bucas Grande Islands. In response, the Coast Guard Station (CGS) Surigao del Sur has halted all vessel travel as the province falls under TCWS No. 1. Additionally, the travel of all vessels from mainland Surigao del Norte to areas under TCWS No. 1 has been temporarily suspended.

The Carrascal LGU in Surigao del Sur has activated its Emergency Operations Center (EOC) following an order from Mayor Joseph Urgel on Wednesday. The EOC is designated as the main hub for command, control, and coordination of all preparedness, response, and emergency operations, ensuring a swift and unified action from all offices and response teams involved.

Other LGUs in the province, including Tandag and Bislig cities, had already ordered the suspension of classes and beach activities since Tuesday. On Wednesday morning, the town of General Luna in Surigao del Norte, located on Siargao Island, also ordered the suspension of classes at all levels in both public and private schools.

Member agencies of Caraga's regional and local disaster councils conducted an online meeting on Tuesday afternoon to discuss potential responses to the impacts of Basyang on the region.
