Bago city: The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology-Negros Island Region (BJMP-NIR) has initiated a probe into the entry of contraband seized during a recent greyhound operation at the Negros Occidental District Jail (NODJ) in Bago City. The operation, which took place in the male dormitory of the facility, lasted seven hours and led to the confiscation of various unauthorized items, including heating equipment, pointed steel bars, improvised bladed weapons, and club-like sticks.
According to Philippines News Agency, BJMP-NIR spokesperson Senior Inspector Juniven Umadhay explained that part of the investigation focuses on determining how these contraband items were smuggled into the jail. The operation was spearheaded by BJMP-NIR Director Chief Supt. Brendan Fulgencio, following intelligence reports and verified information suggesting that persons deprived of liberty (PDL) were in possession of prohibited items, particularly smartphones. However, no personal communication devices were discovered during the search.
Umadhay emphasized that the Greyhound Operations are a critical component of the BJMP’s ongoing efforts to ensure security, discipline, and safety within jail facilities. “By eliminating contrabands, we aim to prevent violence, safeguard PDL, and maintain an orderly environment within our jurisdiction,” he stated.
The operation came on the heels of a noise barrage conducted by a group of PDL on August 28, which called for the removal of acting jail warden Chief Inspector Crisyrel Awe, citing alleged inhumane policies. The protest was captured on mobile phone videos and circulated on social media by local media outlets. Following the incident, Awe stepped down to facilitate an investigation and was succeeded by Senior Inspector Raymond Aro as officer-in-charge.
Umadhay assured the public that BJMP-NIR is committed to enhancing measures against the infiltration of prohibited items in detention facilities. “We assure the public that we remain steadfast in our commitment to uphold the mandate of safe, secure, and humane safekeeping of PDL,” he affirmed.
