Bishop Seeks Truth Over Death of Student-Athlete

Prosperidad: Bishop Ruben Labajo has joined the family of Ateneo men's basketball rookie Rene Clert 'Bobet' Baterbonia in seeking the truth over his death during a team-building activity early this month. Baterbonia was laid to rest on Wednesday in his hometown in Talacogon, Agusan del Sur.

According to Philippines News Agency, Bishop Labajo delivered a homily during the Holy Mass held for Baterbonia at the Talacogon Municipal Gymnasium, urging attendees to pray for the truth to emerge regarding the circumstances of Baterbonia's death. The Catholic prelate called on Baterbonia's loved ones and friends to find solace in faith rather than anger and resentment.

During the service, Bishop Labajo praised the 18-year-old student-athlete for his impact on those around him, emphasizing that Baterbonia left behind a legacy that inspired many, not just his family but also young people who looked up to him.

The incident, which also claimed the life of teammate Divine Adili, occurred during a team-building activity at a resort in Dipaculao, Aurora, where both athletes drowned. The deaths have prompted multiple investigations from various government agencies due to speculations about the events leading to the tragedy.
