Bicol: The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has called on its personnel in Bicol to remain steadfast in honoring their duties and responsibilities in delivering services to the public, emphasizing their vital role in ensuring maritime safety, security, and national development. During the 27th founding anniversary on Wednesday, PCG Deputy Commandant for Administration Vice Admiral Arturo Cornelio highlighted the strategic importance of the Bicol Region, describing it as more than just a geographic area but a critical gateway connecting Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
According to Philippines News Agency, Cornelio added that Bicol serves as a vital maritime corridor, especially during emergencies, as it facilitates relief, rescue, and response operations, making the mission of Coast Guard personnel essential to national security, economic stability, and public safety. He lauded the dedication of PCG personnel in the region, noting that for 27 years, they have stood watch over challenging waters, from the eastern seaboard's rough seas to the busy Matnog Port, consistently demonstrating skill, resilience, and commitment to service.
"In times of disaster, when communities are cut off and people are in distress, you are among the first to respond and often the last to leave," Cornelio said.
Meanwhile, at least 500 personnel of the Philippine Coast Guard in Bicol (PCG-5) will be deployed to ensure a safe and peaceful observance of Semana Santa, Commodore Ivan Roldan, PCG-5 commander, said in an interview Thursday. "Right now, we are adding personnel to our major ports here in Bicol, especially in Matnog, Pilar, Pasacao, and Tabaco, among others," he said.
Roldan added that despite expectations of a possible decrease in passenger and vehicle volume due to rising fuel prices, the agency continues to intensify its preparations. "The Philippine Coast Guard continues to monitor and enforce maritime inspection in the ports," he added.
The PCG reiterated its commitment to upholding its mandate in the region, calling on all personnel to remain dedicated to their roles as frontline responders, law enforcers, and partners in nation-building.
