Baguio: At least 1,300 jeepney drivers in Baguio will each receive PHP5,000 in financial aid from the local government as part of a broader initiative to support the transport sector amid rising fuel costs, Mayor Benjamin Magalong announced on Thursday.
According to Philippines News Agency, Mayor Magalong emphasized that the assistance will not be a one-time disbursement, indicating plans for additional rounds of aid. The mayor also mentioned separate financial assistance for those providing free rides and arrangements for jeepney associations. The aid initiative is in response to the severe impact of the energy emergency on the transport sector, with taxi and other public utility drivers next in line for support.
Fuel prices in Baguio have surged, with diesel now costing between PHP125 to PHP133 per liter. The mayor highlighted the long queues of commuters at night, which have shown improvement due to the aid provided and the commitment from drivers to operate jeepneys in the evening. The city's initial fund of PHP10 million for the transport sector is being supplemented by ongoing efforts to secure additional resources.
Mayor Magalong assured residents that after addressing the transport sector's needs, the city will extend aid to indigents and other vulnerable groups. He also stated that the distribution of aid will be handled by the city social welfare office, with no political involvement.
