Legazpi city: At least 250 students from various private and public high schools in this city will benefit from the Fire Square roadshow of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) 5 (Bicol), as part of Fire Prevention Month. During the opening of the two-day event at a mall here on Tuesday, BFP-Legazpi acting Fire Marshal, Senior Insp. Joeres Rey Oyardo, emphasized that participants will learn firsthand life-saving techniques and practical emergency skills.
According to Philippines News Agency, the roadshow aims to instill accountability and responsibility in children and young adults by teaching them essential life-saving techniques and skills necessary during disasters and unforeseen incidents. Oyardo mentioned that similar fire roadshows are being conducted at stations in remote schools and barangays across the city.
The students participating in the event will learn basic bandaging, first aid, CPR, electrical safety, disaster preparedness, rappelling, knot tying, and other practical emergency and survival skills. Oyardo highlighted the importance of starting to learn these techniques early to be prepared for emergencies.
In a separate interview, Legazpi City Mayor Hisham Ismail noted that the roadshow provides students with additional knowledge applicable during fires and other disasters. He also mentioned that the activity could inspire young students to consider future careers as firefighters.
A teacher from Saint Agnes Academy (SAA) expressed that the activity offers students an opportunity to engage in activities outside the classroom and gain valuable first-hand experience. The teacher emphasized the importance of such exposure in preparing students for unexpected disasters.
A Grade 9 student from SAA shared that the event is crucial for their generation, providing knowledge that may be useful in the future. The student appreciated the opportunity to learn from professionals handling and organizing the event.
