Basilan Releases P2.2-M Aid to 150 Decommissioned MILF Members

Basilan: Basilan Gov. Mujiv Hataman called on local government units to actively support peace-building efforts by promoting the welfare of former Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) combatants, as the province formally integrated 150 decommissioned fighters into its "Usap Tayo, Gob" program Thursday. The program, held at the Provincial Capitol in Lamitan City, is a direct-action public consultation initiative led by Hataman that brings medical, financial, and legal aid directly to barangays to ensure local issues are heard and addressed.

According to Philippines News Agency, the provincial government, together with the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity and the Local Amnesty Board, rolled out a comprehensive reintegration package. This package includes PHP15,000 in immediate cash aid per combatant, PHP5 million for livelihood and literacy funds, and an annual PHP50,000 college scholarship grant for the beneficiaries' children.

Hataman emphasized the importance of local government units' involvement in the peace process, noting that the decommissioning process came at a high cost. MILF Commander Rajan Abdurahman highlighted that the process was "paid for with blood and lives," a sentiment echoed by military and police officials who stated that true courage lies in the decision to lay down arms.

One of the former combatants, Adzaman Awal from Al-Barka town, expressed gratitude for the assistance, stating it would greatly help his family and livelihood. Additionally, Hataman urged the 150 former combatants to apply for the Local Amnesty Program before the March 4 deadline.
