Bacolod: Lone District Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez has announced plans to organize a flood control summit aimed at addressing the recurring flood issues plaguing this highly urbanized city. Benitez made the announcement over the weekend, emphasizing the need for real and actionable solutions, although he did not specify a date for the summit.
According to Philippines News Agency, Benitez, who previously served as Bacolod’s mayor, intends to gather residents, representatives from nearby areas, national and local government officials, contractors, and experts to tackle the flooding problem. Last month, monsoon rains led to flooding in Bacolod’s northern region, impacting over 5,000 individuals. The adjacent Talisay City also faced similar challenges, with 15,605 people affected across 16 villages.
Benitez highlighted the importance of accountability, stating that those responsible for failed or inadequate flood control projects should face consequences. The ‘Isumbong sa Pangulo’ (Report to the President) website details several multi-million flood control projects in Bacolod, with projected completion dates ranging from 2022 to 2025. However, Benitez emphasized that the summit’s goal is not to assign blame but rather to collaborate on effective strategies to safeguard lives, homes, and livelihoods.
In light of recent events, Mayor Greg Gasataya has been actively working on flood mitigation efforts, focusing on clearing and dredging major waterways to protect vulnerable areas within the city.
