Antique Drill Tests Site of Strong 1948 Earthquake

Manila: The last quarter National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) in Western Visayas on Nov. 20 will test the readiness of Anini-y town, the epicenter of the 8.2 magnitude quake in 1948. ‘An 8.2 magnitude earthquake had happened in Anini-y, and the area still has a high susceptibility, being near the Negros Trench,’ Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office chief Broderick Train said in an interview on Tuesday.

According to Philippines News Agency, the earthquake with tsunami drill will test the operational system of Antique in terms of rescue and retrieval. The drill will be attended by the Office of Civil Defense Western Visayas and local government officials. ‘Through the drill, the people participating will know what to do in case there is an earthquake and a tsunami,’ Train said.

The coastal community of San Jose de Buenavista also participated in an earthquake and tsunami-induced drill at the Evelio B. Javier Park on Oct. 22.
