Manila: A Philippine Air Force helicopter conducted an operation to distribute leaflets urging members of extremist groups in Maguindanao del Sur to surrender and participate in government peace initiatives. The operation, which took place on Sunday and Monday, targeted the towns of Shariff Aguak, Datu Saudi Ampatuan, Mamasapano, and Shariff Saydona Mustapha.
According to Philippines News Agency, Brig. Gen. Edgar Catu, commander of the 601st Infantry Brigade, stated that this initiative is part of their ongoing efforts to persuade members of local terrorist groups, Dawlah Islamiya (DI) and Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), to lay down their arms. The leaflets, written in both Filipino and the Maguindanaon language, encouraged extremists to surrender and take advantage of the government's peace and reconciliation programs.
The leaflets also urged extremists to collaborate with police and military forces, highlighting that local governments are prepared to assist them in reintegrating into society and living peacefully with their families. Maj. Gen. Jose Vladimir Cagara, commander of the Army's 6th Infantry Division, reiterated the call for surrender and encouraged local governments to actively support national peace and disarmament efforts.
