Manila: A total of 8,823 barangays across the nation have been identified as prone to landslides and flooding due to heavy rainfall, as warned by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) on Saturday. This advisory is based on the latest 72-hour rainfall forecast from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), and it remains effective from August 29 until September 1.

According to Philippines News Agency, residents in the specified areas and those located nearby or downstream are urged to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions. The forecasts utilize GSM and WRF rainfall thresholds of 50 mm, although these can vary depending on ground conditions. The areas covered by the advisory include several communities in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Abra, Apayao, Ifugao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Benguet, Metro Manila, Aurora, Bataan, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Zambales, Pampanga, Bulacan, Batangas, Cavite, Laguna, Rizal, Occidental Mindoro, and Oriental Mindoro. In a separate statement, the Office of Civil Defense highlighted that areas not listed but located near or downstream of the identified zones might also face impacts. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported that the enhanced southwest monsoon, known locally as 'habagat,' along with tropical cyclones Luis, Maymay, and Neneng, have affected 2.3 million families, or 8 million individuals, nationwide as of August 29. The severe weather conditions have resulted in a death toll of 32, with 19 individuals injured. Additionally, at least three people are reported missing in Quezon City, Manila, and Batangas City.
