Antique LGUs suspend classes due to inclement weather

Classes in public and private schools in 18 local government units (LGUs) in Antique have been suspended due to the southwest monsoon as enhanced by Super Typhoon Karding but work continues.   Antique Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer (PDRRMO) Broderick Train said in an interview Monday that LGUs in the province decided to suspend classes from pre-schoolers to senior high school Monday because of the intermittent moderate to heavy rains.   “Our LGUs early this morning issued their respective advisories on the suspension of classes due to our heightened alert status. NCR Covid-19 positivity rate now 18.5%: OCTA

Nograles renews call for creation of Sierra Madre Dev’t Authority

Rizal 4th District Representative Fidel Nograles has renewed his call for the passage of House Bill 1972 seeking to create the Sierra Madre Development Authority (SMDA).   Nograles made the call on Monday, which coincides with the commemoration of the “Save Sierra Madre Day” in the aftermath of Super Typhoon Karding which hit many areas in Luzon.   Once enacted into law, SMDA shall be tasked with conserving and managing the 540-kilometer mountain range, Nograles said.   “Amid the threat of Karding, Sierra Madre has once again shown just how crucial it is in protecting us against extreme weather events.

OVP to deploy 3 food trucks to feed malnourished children

The Office of the Vice President (OVP) is set to deploy three “kalusugan” food trucks for malnourished children in areas affected by natural and human-induced calamities.   Lemuel Ortonio, OVP assistant chief of staff, said the deployment of the vehicles will be based on recommendations from the Department of Education (DepEd) and National Nutrition Council (NNC) with considerations on the highest rate of malnourished or undernourished school children.   “Malnutrition is a significant public concern in the Philippines and to address the issue, the food trucks will serve warm and nutritious meals to them,” Ortonio said during the blessing ceremony

Gatchalian calls for intensified cybercrime prevention efforts

Senator Win Gatchalian is seeking to reinstate the cut in the National Bureau of Investigation’s (NBI) 2023 budget to intensify the government’s cybercrime prevention efforts.   He expressed concern that the National Expenditure Program (NEP) trimmed down the 2023 budget of the NBI to PHP1.8 billion from 2022’s actual budget of PHP2.3 billion.   The cut includes the NBI’s budget for its anti-cybercrime enforcement unit to PHP21.2 million or a slash of almost 20 percent compared to this year’s PHP26.4 million.   Gatchalian said the reduction in the NBI’S budget could adversely affect its anti-cybercrime operations, especially at a time

752 typhoon-hit residents in Cordillera get DSWD aid

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) said it continues to provide aid to at least 752 individuals who were affected by Super Typhoon Karding.   In a Facebook post on Monday, the DSWD-Cordillera said 14 evacuation centers — three in Abra; seven in Benguet, and four in Mountain Province — are currently providing shelter to 233 individuals.   The number of individuals in evacuation centers includes 99 in Abra, 91 in Benguet, and 43 in Mountain Province.   Another 519 individuals displaced in the three provinces are staying with their relatives or
