2.5K jobs available in Davao’s tourism job fair

At least 2,576 job vacancies are available during the two-day Trabaho, Turismo, Asenso Philippine Tourism Job Fair that opened at the Abreeza Mall here Thursday.


Organized by the Department of Tourism and Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), the two-day job fair, touted as the biggest so far in this area, gathered 42 employers from different parts of the Davao Region.


In a press briefing, DOLE-11 Assistant Director Jason Balais said that 24 of the 42 employers were from primary establishments, while 18 are from the secondary and allied services.


Interested job applicants may apply to accommodation establishments; travel and tour services; Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions (MICE) facilities and organizers; tourist transport operators; health and wellness services; food services other tourism-related establishments.


“Even after this event, there will be more job fairs to cater to the unemployed here in Davao Region,” Balais said.


Meanwhile, Balais said the unemployment rate in the region has decreased this year to 2.9 percent from the 4.7 percent before the pandemic.


DOLE’s labor force estimation rate also showed that around 60,000 individuals are unemployed in Davao Region.


“With activities like this – job fairs and the reopening of the establishments, we are confident that we can provide jobs for those actively seeking employment,” he said.


On the other hand, DOT-11 Director Tanya Rabat Tan said tourism remains as one of the world’s major economic sectors.


Before the pandemic, Tan said the tourism sector was the key contributor to the resilience of the Philippines ‘external payments position and overall economic development.


“We hope that this job fair will be able to help the tourism sector recuperate from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic,” she said.


DOT Undersecretary Ferdinand Jumapao assured that the jobs fair will be a regular activity of the department, as it is one of the priorities of Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco.


“Expect that we will be hiring more. We are just awaiting the schedule,” he said.


The Trabaho, Turismo, Asenso job fair was simultaneously launched in Manila, Cebu, and this city.
