Zamboanga: Authorities arrested 204 fugitives during various law enforcement operations, and facilitated the surrender of 19 New People's Army (NPA) supporters in the Zamboanga Peninsula in January, police announced Wednesday.
According to Philippines News Agency, Brig. Gen. Edwin Quilates, director of Police Regional Office 9 (Zamboanga Peninsula), stated that the fugitives consist of 57 most wanted persons and 147 other wanted persons. Quilates emphasized that these arrests were the result of coordinated law enforcement operations across Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga City, and Sulu.
Quilates noted, "These missions were executed through close coordination between local police units, national support agencies, and valuable intelligence provided by vigilant citizens." This collaboration highlights the community's role in aiding law enforcement efforts to apprehend individuals evading justice.
In parallel, 19 NPA supporters surrendered after withdrawing their support from the communist NPA remnants operating in the region. Their decision to surrender was primarily influenced by the peace initiatives of the government and the assurance of rehabilitation under the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP).
Under E-CLIP, former NPA supporters undergo a comprehensive reintegration process that includes livelihood assistance, skills training, and other socio-economic interventions. These measures aim to provide them with sustainable opportunities for a peaceful and productive future, marking a shift from conflict to cooperation.
Quilates remarked that the voluntary surrender of former NPA supporters stands as a powerful symbol of transformation, with individuals choosing peace over violence. The efforts of the authorities and the community reflect a significant step towards maintaining peace and order in the region.
