Zamboanga city: The city government suspended classes at all levels in public and private schools on Friday afternoon due to inclement weather. Mayor Khymer Olaso ordered school officials and students to go home immediately, emphasizing safety by advising, "Avoid roaming around that might endanger your lives."

According to Philippines News Agency, the decision comes in the wake of a tragic incident on July 18, when a female student drowned while five others were rescued at Tumaga River in Sitio Canucutan, Barangay Pasonanca. The group had gone swimming following a dance rehearsal amid bad weather. Mayor Olaso urged parents to monitor their children's activities following the suspension of classes.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration has forecasted cloudy skies with scattered rain and thunderstorms across the Zamboanga Peninsula, Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi due to a low-pressure area. Dr. Elmeir Jade Apolinario, chief of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, advised stranded commuters to contact 911 emergency services for assistance.

Dr. Apolinario also announced that vehicles would provide free rides to commuters, and emergency vehicles would be dispatched to assist those stranded in flooded areas. He called on the Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils to monitor their respective communities, particularly those near riverbanks and in low-lying areas.
