Turin: Italy-based Filipina gymnast Maria Sofia Castillo Rivera delivered yet another promising performance after winning two golds and a silver medal in the 3rd Rhythmic Gymnastics Trial Regional Competition in Turin, Italy on Sept. 21. Rivera, who won five medals in various competitions in 2024, ruled both the all-around and free hand events and finished second in the hoop routine.
According to Philippines News Agency, Sofia’s mother, Venus, attributed her 11-year-old daughter’s winning ways to discipline, dedication, and a strong support system. Venus said Sofia trains four days a week for four hours after school, managing to balance both her academics and her passion for the sport. “The toughest part is really her schedule,” Venus said. “She finishes training late on weekdays, and she has to wake up early for sessions on weekends. And on Sundays, she usually has competitions. But Sofia truly loves the sport, and we as parents are here to fully support her.”
Sofia was born and raised in Turin but her gymnastics journey began in Lipa, Batangas, at the age of five through a grassroots program. She began competing at the age of eight and now trains under the prestigious Eurogymnica Torino club in Italy. With each competition, Sofia continues to grow both in skill and confidence.
“We’re always proud when she wins. It’s a reward not just for her efforts, but for all the time and sacrifices she puts into training,” Venus said. Venus mentioned that Sofia has a lot of upcoming competitions, where she hopes to continue her winning streak and “bring pride to both the Filipino and Italian communities she represents.”
Sofia started 2025 with a gold medal in the all-around event 1st Trial Individual Championships in Italy on March 26 and another gold in the same event at the Trial Regional Championships in May. Although young, her focus, passion, and perseverance make her one to watch in Italy’s rising generation of elite gymnasts, her mother said.
