Manila: A hotel utilizing hydrogen as its main energy source has opened in the town of Namie in the northeastern Japan prefecture of Fukushima. This groundbreaking establishment marks a significant milestone as the first of its kind globally, reflecting the area's commitment to innovative energy solutions.
According to Philippines News Agency, the hotel is operated by Namie-based company Date Juki, which is known for its heavy machinery rental and freight transport services. The town of Namie aims to foster a community that accelerates the use of hydrogen, and it hosts one of the world's largest hydrogen production facilities.
The hotel, a detached house, is strategically located next to a hydrogen station managed by Date Juki. This location allows the hotel to function as a real-life demonstration of living with hydrogen as a primary energy source. During operational hours, the station supplies hydrogen to the hotel's fuel cells, water heater, and grill through a pipeline, powering all energy-related equipment. At night, when the station halts operations, the hotel utilizes external electricity generated from renewable sources.
The accommodation charges at the hotel are set at 97,000 yen per night, with a restriction of one group per day to ensure an exclusive experience. During the opening ceremony, Namie Mayor Eiko Yoshida, along with other participants, toured the facility and enjoyed meals prepared on a hydrogen-powered grill.
Date Juki head Akihiro Zenji expressed optimism about the potential expansion of hydrogen use, stating, "If we incorporate hydrogen into our lives, we could expand its use." The opening of this hotel is a significant step towards realizing this vision.
