Baguio: A World War II soldier has called on fellow veterans to continue passing on the values of heroism, nationalism, and bravery to the younger generation. Marcial Guinatang, 71, president of the Veterans Federation of the Philippines, emphasized the importance of instilling these values during the Kapihan with CARE forum.
According to Philippines News Agency, Guinatang urged his fellow veterans to actively participate in liberation day activities and the commemoration of historical occasions, such as National Heroes Day and Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor). He believes that by exemplifying love of country within their families, veterans can encourage the younger generation to carry on the legacy of World War II veterans.
Guinatang, who served the Philippine Army for over 30 years, expressed his willingness to protect the country if called to service, despite his advanced age. He highlighted the role of the Army Reserve Command and mentioned his readiness to contribute in any capacity, even if it means taking on tasks like dishwashing to support the cause.
He also addressed the ongoing territorial issues in the West Philippine Sea, asserting that the area belongs to the Philippines and expressing his readiness to protect it.
Cherrylyn Sabling, Director of the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office-Cordillera, stressed the significance of remembering the bravery, heroism, and nationalism of veterans, which have greatly contributed to the country's struggle for freedom. She emphasized the need for the youth to remember these sacrifices and continue protecting the nation.
Under Proclamation 466, the Philippine Veterans Week is commemorated annually from April 5 to 11, with April 9 designated as a regular holiday to remember the 1942 Fall of Bataan, when Filipino and American forces surrendered to the Japanese Imperial Army after months of resistance with limited resources.
