Visayas Grid Faces Another Yellow Alert Amid Power Plant Outages

Visayas: The Visayas grid was again placed under yellow alert on Tuesday, from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., as a generating unit of a major coal-fired power plant remained unavailable. In an advisory, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said the grid's available capacity during the period was estimated at 2,509 megawatts (MW), while peak demand was projected to reach 2,333 MW.

According to Philippines News Agency, a yellow alert is declared when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the grid's contingency requirement. NGCP reported that generating unit 2 of Panay Energy Development Corporation (PEDC) remains on forced outage. Additionally, 14 power plants have gone on forced outage this May alone, while one plant has remained unavailable since March.

Three plants have been offline since 2025, two since 2024, two since 2023, and one since 2021. Apart from these, 15 other power plants are operating on derated capacity, resulting in the loss of about 960.55 MW to the grid, the NGCP said.
