Uwan’s Damage to Agriculture in Pangasinan Reaches PHP1.3 Billion

Pangasinan: Partial damage to agriculture caused by Super Typhoon Uwan (international name Fung-wong) in Pangasinan has breached the PHP1 billion mark, according to the latest report by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO). The report, released on Thursday, said of the total amount, PHP102.3 million was on palay or rice crops, PHP605.5 million on fishery, PHP561.6 million on high-value crops, and PHP37.2 million on corn. A total of 13,232 farmers and fisherfolk have been affected, it said.

According to Philippines News Agency, partial damage to livestock and infrastructure in the province was at PHP224.5 million and PHP176.5 million, respectively. Pangasinan Governor Ramon Guico III earlier said the provincial government has received PHP50 million from the national government, which will be used for rehabilitation and the urgent needs of the affected residents, aside from the family food packs. During the visit of Special Assistant to the President Anton Lagdameo and other Cabinet secretaries, the provincial government presented the immediate needs of the disaster-affected agriculture workers, among them seeds, rice saplings, corn, mango, onion, and lowland vegetables, as well as fry or fingerlings of milkfish and white shrimp.

The province has also presented the need for immediate cash assistance for the affected farmers and fisherfolk. There is also the need for fish traps, gillnets, fyke nets, fish corrals, and motorized boats. Uwan has affected 345,673 families, or 1.17 million individuals, in 42 towns and four cities in the province, prompting the provincial government to declare a state of calamity. No casualty, however, was recorded in the province.
