Dagupan city: Phillip Jude Thaddeus Domantay, a 46-year-old native of Dagupan City now residing in the United States, has been making significant contributions to his hometown by providing scholarships and sponsoring youth programs. His efforts are aimed at honoring his roots and giving back to the community that shaped him.
According to Philippines News Agency, Domantay has been sponsoring the King Phillip Inter-Barangay and All-Star Basketball Tournament since 2022, a venture inspired by frequent requests for sponsorships from local sports enthusiasts. "Every time I go home, they ask for help. We continue supporting them," Domantay shared. This initiative has grown into its fourth season, engaging many communities in Dagupan City, with cash prizes up to PHP50,000 for the champion team.
Local officials like Virgilio Macaraeg Jr. and Mark Escat have praised the tournament for keeping the youth engaged and fostering discipline and teamwork. The funds collected from entry fees and sponsors are redirected to finance scholarships, which Domantay initiated in partnership with Agno Valley College, his alma mater. The scholarship program, launched in 2023, currently supports 30 to 35 secondary and tertiary students, providing financial assistance based on academic and extracurricular performance.
Domantay's philanthropic efforts also extend to supporting cancer patients in the town, aligning with Vice Mayor Daria Dolores Mamaril's advocacy. Reflecting on his humble beginnings, Domantay emphasized the value of hard work and education, which propelled him to seize a scholarship opportunity in the US, despite initial challenges.
Having pursued further studies at Stanford University and establishing successful ventures in healthcare and food service, Domantay remains committed to uplifting his community. He encourages the youth to use their experiences as stepping stones toward success, underscoring the importance of continuous learning and honoring one's roots.
