Cagayan de oro: Public utility vehicles remained accessible to commuters on Monday amid concerns of a transport strike in key areas of Northern Mindanao (Region 10), as local governments and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) rolled out free rides by hiring or subsidizing PUVs from transport cooperatives. LTFRB-10 Director Alexes Joseph Bendijo said in an interview that fewer than 25 percent of the region's total routes were affected.
According to Philippines News Agency, there were only four cooperative transport groups that participated, mostly from the modernized PUVs. Other transport cooperatives, such as the Trafeco Transport Cooperative based in this city, stated that they would not join the strike, also dubbed a "transport holiday." The group emphasized that the rapid increase in fuel prices is a global crisis and not solely attributable to the Philippine government.
The Trafeco Transport Cooperative further expressed that the suspension of fare increases instead of subsidies is a wise and timely decision on the part of the President. Meanwhile, the City Council in Cagayan de Oro approved a fare increase for local motorcycle transport known as "motorelas." The new rate will be PHP12 to PHP13, up from PHP10, depending on current petroleum rates.
City officials stated that the amendment aims to address concerns of motorela drivers affected by the recent increase in gasoline prices.
