Training Young Performers Ensures ‘Resurrection’ Stage Play Thrives in Antique

Sibalom: Training young children of the Iglesia Filipina Independente (IFI) Diocese of Antique helped keep the 'Resurrection of Jesus' stage play alive in the Municipality of Sibalom. The stage play is performed every sunrise on Easter Sunday after the procession of the images of Virgin Mary, Martha, and Mary Magdalene around the Sibalom town plaza, ending at the Philippine Independent Church cathedral. As the procession nears the church, the Archangel Gabriel proclaims the resurrection of Jesus from the grave, while a host of angels lifts their voices in joyful praise to the Lord.

According to Philippines News Agency, Maria Visitacion Dollosa, a third-generation trainer, said she took over from her mother, Gloria Anovert, in 1978, who also succeeded her grandmother, Paz Baccay, the original trainer. Dollosa shared that her grandmother wrote the script of the stage play in the local language Kinaray-a, which is memorized by the angels. Children portraying the angels are seven to nine years old, and families in Sibalom have a strong desire for their children to participate, believing that it brings blessings.

Some parents are keen to nurture their children spiritually and are willing to invest in costumes, stage, and other necessities. Affluent families sometimes spend thousands of pesos, even hiring architects or professional stage decorators to design the play's venue. Despite living abroad, some parents ensure their children return to Antique during Holy Week to participate as angels. Dollosa mentioned that the training typically takes four months to ensure the children can memorize their lines. The training is offered for free, as Dollosa considers it part of her devotion, citing her good health as a blessing.

The annual stage play attracts not only religious attendees but also tourists on Easter Sunday, making it a significant cultural event in the region.
