Manila: The local government of Camalig in Albay province has assured the public that all tourist destinations in the town remain open, operational, and safe to visit despite the ongoing unrest of Mayon Volcano. In a phone interview on Tuesday, Camalig Mayor Carlos Irwin Baldo Jr. stated all local attractions are outside the 6-km permanent danger zone. "We assure you that tourists are safe, as long as they do not enter the 6-km zone. It is still safe for tourists to visit us," he said.
According to Philippines News Agency, Baldo mentioned that a report from their tourism office indicated tourist arrivals from February 2 to 8 nearly reached 4,000, showing an increase in visitor numbers. "The number of tourists coming here wants to catch a glimpse of Mayon Volcano, even at night. We have campers who come here to really see Mayon Volcano," he added.
Baldo emphasized that precautionary measures are being strictly implemented to ensure everyone's health and safety. To safeguard visitors, tourism workers, and the local community, all guests are strongly encouraged to wear face masks outdoors or in areas affected by ashfall. Wearing appropriate masks, such as N95, KN95, or surgical masks, is most effective in filtering fine ash particles. Cloth masks may be used if no alternatives are available, but double-layering is advised.
When ashfall is present, tourists and residents are advised to limit time outdoors or avoid prolonged exposure. Washing hands and face thoroughly after exposure to ash is also instructed, but avoiding rubbing the eyes to prevent irritation is recommended. People with respiratory conditions should exercise caution and carry any required medication.
Tourism personnel continuously monitor conditions in coordination with authorized agencies, including the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the Department of Health, and the local government unit. Baldo also mentioned that tourists may visit the town's popular destinations such as Sumlang Lake, Quituinan Hills, the Sulong Ecopark, and Quituinday Hills.
