Manila: The Archdiocesan Shrine and Parish of Santo Ni±o de Tondo is set to be declared a minor basilica on May 11. The event will feature a solemn eucharistic celebration presided over by Charles John Brown, DD, Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, alongside His Eminence Jose Cardinal Advincula, DD, Archbishop of Manila, and other priests and prelates at 2 p.m. The Tondo Church has invited the faithful to join in celebrating this significant occasion.
According to Philippines News Agency, Pope Leo XIV granted the title to the Archdiocesan Shrine and Parish of Santo Ni±o de Tondo in Manila through a Papal Decree dated November 9, 2025. The designation of a minor basilica is given to churches of notable historical, architectural, or spiritual significance. This recognition also indicates a closer relationship to the Pope, allowing the church to display the papal symbol of crossed keys on its banners, furnishings, and seal.
The Tondo Church, established in 1572, is home to the Santo Ni±o de Tondo, the second oldest image of the Santo Ni±o in the Philippines. The church holds an annual feast on the third Sunday of January to honor this revered image.
