Team PH Ready for Asian Beach Games in China

Sanya: Team Philippines is ready for the 6th Asian Beach Games scheduled on April 22 to 30 in Sanya, a resort city on the southern tip of Hainan Island in China. Jiu-jitsu standouts Annie Ramirez, a two-time Beach Games gold medalist, and Jenna Kaila Napolis, who won the silver at the 2025 World Games, will lead the delegation comprising 101 athletes.

According to Philippines News Agency, Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino expressed confidence in the team's readiness, stating, "Everything and everyone's ready from opening to closing." The closing ceremony will include the Asian Beach Games flag being handed over to representatives from Cebu, the host of the 2028 edition.

The Philippines is particularly hopeful for success in women's beach volleyball, with Thailand Southeast Asian Games gold winner Sunny Villapando teaming up with Sofiah Pagara, Khyle Progella, and Grydelle Matibag. The delegation also includes strong basketball 3x3 quartets and triathletes Raven Alcoseba, Erika Burgos, Andrew Remolino, Inaki Lorbes, and Matthew Hermosa. These athletes have previously medaled in the SEA Games, showcasing their potential for the upcoming competition.

Tolentino noted the decade-long gap since the last Beach Games, which took place in Da Nang, Vietnam in 2016. The event has previously been hosted by Bali, Indonesia (2008), Oman (2010), Haiyang, China (2012), and Phuket, Thailand (2014). "We have athletes in jiu-jitsu, beach volleyball, and handball, and we have, too, in wrestling and triathlon," he added.

A total of 45 member-countries from the Olympic Council of Asia are expected to participate, with additional entries invited from Australia, Solomon Islands, Tahiti, and New Zealand. To date, the Philippines has secured five gold, 10 silver, and 35 bronze medals in the Games.
