Romeo Momo Sr. hailed the Commission on Higher Education's (CHED) approval for North Eastern Mindanao State University (NEMSU) to open a College of Medicine, calling it a milestone in expanding access to quality medical education in the province. "This approval brings us closer to our goal of making quality medical education more accessible to the people of Surigao del Sur," Momo said in a statement Wednesday. He added that the move will help shape the next generation of doctors in the Caraga Region.
According to Philippines News Agency, the CHED, in a press release Tuesday, announced that four Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), including NEMSU, were granted permits to offer Doctor of Medicine programs beginning Academic Year 2026-2027. The agency said the approval will broaden opportunities for aspiring doctors nationwide. NEMSU, in a separate statement on Wednesday, noted that it underwent CHED evaluation visits to validate compliance with minimum requirements under Memorandum Order 18, series of 2016.
The university was authorized to operate the first- and second-year levels of its Doctor of Medicine program. "The approval supports the university's and the province's aim to produce homegrown doctors and healthcare professionals who can serve communities across the province and the region," NEMSU said. Officials added that details on admission and enrollment will be announced soon.
