Speaker Dy Congratulates Acting Senate President Gatchalian Amid Senate Leadership Changes

Manila: The House of Representatives on Wednesday extended its congratulations to acting Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian, expressing confidence that the Senate would continue to fulfill its constitutional responsibilities. This announcement came as House leaders, led by Speaker Faustino 'Bojie' Dy III, welcomed the Senate's return to full functionality.

According to Philippines News Agency, Speaker Dy conveyed, "On behalf of the House of Representatives, we extend our warmest congratulations to the Acting Senate President, Sherwin Gatchalian, on your assumption of this important responsibility." Dy emphasized that during times when the nation seeks stability and leadership from its institutions, a fully operational Senate is vital for progressing legislation, exercising oversight, and upholding democratic governance. He expressed confidence that under Gatchalian's leadership, the Senate would continue to uphold its constitutional duties with integrity and independence.

In addition to offering his congratulations, Dy wished Gatchalian success in leading the chamber through the country's challenges and opportunities. Meanwhile, the House prosecution panel reiterated their readiness for the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, anticipated to begin in July. Prosecutor Terry Ridon of Bicol Saro Party-list affirmed the prosecution team's focus on preparation, irrespective of changes in the Senate leadership.

Ridon stated, "The House prosecution panel is ready to proceed to trial in July under any Senate leadership and under any Presiding Officer of the Senate Impeachment Court." He emphasized the prosecution's commitment to the evidence, constitutional processes, and timely resolution of the impeachment trial, looking forward to the trial proceeding according to the established timelines.

House trial spokesperson Zia Alonto Adiong of Lanao del Sur commented on the Senate's leadership changes, acknowledging them as internal matters. He expressed respect for the senators' decisions and assured that the 11-member House prosecution panel remains prepared to fulfill its constitutional mandate. Adiong also extended his congratulations to Gatchalian, expressing confidence in the Senate's continued performance of its constitutional functions.

Former Surigao del Norte Rep. Robert Ace Barbers also welcomed the new Senate majority, acknowledging their role in ensuring the chamber's continued adherence to its constitutional mandate. Barbers praised the new majority for their loyalty to the Constitution, citing their actions as a significant public service act that places the country's interests above personal agendas.

The developments have been positively received by House officials as they work towards ensuring the Senate can continue its legislative duties and fulfill its constitutional responsibilities, including serving as an impeachment court in the upcoming trial of the Vice President.
