Solon Advocates for Ombudsman to Lead Following ICI’s Completed Mandate

Antipolo city: Deputy Speaker Ronaldo Puno has called for the Office of the Ombudsman to take charge of ongoing investigations, asserting that the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) has completed its assigned tasks. Puno emphasized the constitutional role of the Ombudsman as the nation's primary oversight body, advocating for a clear delineation of responsibilities to prevent overlapping inquiries.

According to Philippines News Agency, Puno expressed his belief during a press conference that the ICI had fulfilled its mandate, and it is now appropriate for the Ombudsman to assume responsibility. He highlighted past issues that had undermined the Ombudsman's credibility but noted an improvement in the current situation. Puno specifically praised Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla, asserting that the official's credibility was high.

Puno warned that involving multiple investigative bodies could confuse the public and weaken trust in the outcomes. He underscored the Constitution's designation of the Ombudsman as the sole authority for such matters, suggesting that the transition from the ICI to the Ombudsman would enhance clarity and accountability.

He argued that the ICI's focus on the Executive branch necessitates the involvement of the Ombudsman to ensure comprehensive oversight. Puno expressed his confidence in Ombudsman Remulla's capabilities, citing his public support and determination.

Puno concluded by urging a single-point approach to investigations, emphasizing the importance of public trust and the need for a clear, accountable process.
