Benguet: Two new battery energy storage system (BESS) projects with a total capacity of 80 megawatts (MW) are set for development in Benguet province following the financial closure of the joint venture firm SN Aboitiz Power (SNAP). Aboitiz Power, in a disclosure with the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE), announced the upcoming projects, which include a 40-MW BESS at the Binga Hydroelectric Power Plant (Phase 2) and another 40-MW BESS at the Ambuklao Hydroelectric Power Plant.
According to Philippines News Agency, both systems will be co-located with SNAP's existing hydro facilities and are designed to provide ancillary services to the Luzon grid through the reserves market. SNAP is a joint venture between Aboitiz Renewables Inc. and Scatec ASA.
The disclosure further stated that the new capacity will increase SNAP's energy portfolio. This includes a 24-MW BESS at the Magat Hydroelectric Power Plant, as well as a 16 MW at Magat, both of which are scheduled to begin commercial operations late this year. Once these projects are completed, SNAP's total BESS capacity in operation and under construction will reach 160MW.
BESS provide stable capacity to the grid by addressing real-time frequency fluctuations.
